The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), on Sunday, announced the setting up of a three-member committee to investigate what it described as “shameful behaviour” exhibited by its members in Enugu State during an aborted election by the state chapter.

While describing the action as “public opprobrium” brought on the noble profession of medicine in the country, the association apologised to Nigerians and other nationals, who might have been disappointed by the behaviour of some doctors during the Enugu State NMA election.

The President, NMA, Prof. Innocent Ujah, who announced the setting up of the committee during a press conference in Abuja, said the decision was taken at the national officers’ committee meeting.

Ujah told all the state branches of the NMA, who had yet to conduct their elections, to ensure that the values and inalienable rights of members were not eroded.

The committee, chaired by a former President of the association, Prof. Mike Ogirima, also has Agam Ayuk and Chris Yilgwan, the immediate-past chairmen of the Cross River and Plateau state chapters of the NMA, respectively, as members.

Ujah said, “It is a show of shame that ordinary state NMA election would result in monumental destruction of property and social dislocation of the society, even at this time that we are in the forefront of the containment of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The Enugu event on Thursday, August 6, 2020, clearly portrayed a bad image of our noble profession.

“I wish, on behalf of the NOC of the association, to publicly apologise to Nigerians and other nationals, who may have been disappointed at the behaviour of some disgruntled elements during the Enugu State NMA election.

“Electoral violence in any form does not represent what the Nigerian doctor stands for and it is, therefore, at variance with our noble conduct and ideals.”
