Former military governor of Akwa Ibom State, Idongesit Nkanga, has died from COVID-19 complications.

According to family sources and other credible sources at the Isolation Centre, the Nsit Ibom-born politician was on life support for several days before his passage Thursday.

Nkanga, who retired as an Air Commodore in the Nigerian Airforce, died at the age of 68.

It was gathered that Nkanga’s wife, Funmi, and his longstanding Personal Assistant, Wilson, who is a retired agent of the country’s secret service have both been quarantined.

Nkanga, born January 27, 1952 was governor of Akwa Ibom from September 1990 to January 1992 during the regime of General Ibrahim Bangangida as Military Head of State.

In 2003, Nkanga contested for the governorship seat of Akwa Ibom State against Obong Victor Attah Attah under Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP).

The former commander of the Presidential Air Fleet was a serial governorship campaign Director General in the state. He headed Chief Godswill Akpabio’s 2nd term campaign team while he also served in Governor Udom Emmanuel’s Divine Mandate (campaign organization) in both 2015 and 2019 governorship elections.

Ahead of the 2023 governorship election, he was a strong advocate for a non-cultist emerging as Udom Emmanuel’s successor.

He has been actively involved in the development of Akwa Ibom (now Victor Attah) International Airport since 2007 where he was appointed Chairman of Akwa Ibom Airport Implementation Committee and later as Chairman of Ibom Airport Development Company Ltd.

Nkanga, an Elder of the Qua Iboe Church of Nigeria was the National Chairman, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

As the chairman of PANDEF, Nkanga was very vocal in the campaign for the restructuring of Nigeria and the development of the country’s Niger Delta region.

ThisDay published on December 24 an interview it had with Mr Nkanga where he talked about non-completion of the East-West Road which is meant to link together the states in the Niger Delta.

He also talked about the refusal of oil companies operating in the Niger Delta to relocate their head office to the region.
