The pastor in charge of United Evangelical Church at Iyano community in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State, Pastor Michael Samson, was attacked by angry youths numbering about 20 who invaded the church with a violent masquerade on Monday.

The pastor was reportedly beaten to coma for refusing to allow the masquerade and the youths access to the church.

It was gathered that the mob attack on the pastor occurred at about 11pm Monday night.

Trouble started when the pastor had during the day denied the youths and their masquerade access to the church while they were performing a traditional ceremony.

Angered by the pastor’s resistance, it was learnt, the youths armed with dangerous weapons, returned to the church at night to deal with the clergyman, who was sleeping at the time they invaded.

The pastor was woken up from sleep and seriously tortured by the gang to the extent that he slumped and fell into coma before sympathizers rushed him to the General Hospital in Idah where he was revived and currently on admission.

“The youths and the masquerade wanted to perform to the gods of the land known in Igala as "Ane". The pastor told them that this is not the right place to do it and asked them to leave the church premises. After leaving, they came back to the church in the night fully kitted with dangerous objects to beat him to coma.

“They were up to 20. We are praying right now that nothing should happen to our brother because he is currently in critical condition.

”The incident has been reported to the Police Division in Onyedega under Ibaji LGA and the police have commenced investigation” a member of the pastor's  family told newsmen on Tuesday.

Spokesman of Kogi state police command could not be reached for comments on the incident by press time but some indigenes of Ibaji had taken to the social media to condemn the attack on the pastor describing it as strange in Ibaji land, which is reputed for religious tolerance and freedom of worship.
