The military in the early hours of Sunday reportedly invaded the country home of Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Attorney for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in Oraifite, Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra State.

Residents of the town were thrown into panic and confusion as heavy noise from sporadic shootings in the area woke them from sleep.

A human right organization, the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (Interscoiety) raised the alarm in a statement issued Sunday morning saying it “has received distress calls from lawyers working in the Law Firm of Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor (I.C. Ejiofor and Co), Abuja, informing us that the combined team of armed soldiers, SSS and Police have surrounded the Oraifite nuclear and e-waste facility.”

“The latest armed violence from the Government of Nigeria began some minutes before 3 a.m. this morning, Sunday, June 6, 2021, and Intersociety was alerted around 4 a.m., prompting the issuance of this urgent statement,” the organization said.

The statement further reads: “We also managed to get in touch with Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor over the phone, and he verified the attack, stating that “soldiers, assisted by police and SSS agents, are shooting in several directions and are preparing to breach into his main compound.

“He heard the distress voices of his village neighbors panicked and sobbing, indicating that they must have been abducted,” he added, “and they are likely to include early morning neighborhood sales attendants and those returning from church vigils, etc.

"The activist Lawyer also thought that certain members of his family, including security and domestic assistants, had been kidnapped, and that he had only told the Oraifite Area Commander (ACP Afolabi) and a few others that he was around when he returned home for the weekend yesterday evening.

“It should be recalled that on the 2nd of December 2019, Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, his brothers, and their family homes in Oraifite, Ekwusigo, Anambra State, were viciously attacked. His very pregnant wife nearly avoided miscarriage and was miraculously delivered later.

"The attacks occurred on the 2nd of December 2019, right following the family’s farewell church service for his late brother, an Anglican priest. Barr Ejiofor evaded being slain by military and police by a hair’s breadth. In the end, five people were killed, including his domestic helpers, and hundreds more were injured.

"The Community’s enraged adolescents protested angrily in the Market Square, resulting in the deaths of two key police officers. The Nigerian government quickly dispatched forces and set fire to 22 buildings, including a dozen family homes and ten retail outlets. Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor went underground for months after the savage assault, shutting down his legal offices in Abuja, Nnewi, and elsewhere.

"Intersociety condemned the latest invasion of Ejiofor’s home and urged the Nigerian government and security forces to “stop this madness and crudity.

“By these crudities, the Nigerian Government is setting the country on fire even more, and this is what Intersociety, as an expert rights group, has been telling the Nigerian Government since 2016.

"The government of Nigeria’s crude manner of invading residents’ homes at ungodly hours, particularly the houses of respected and legally identifiable persons, and brazenly violating their rights to privacy and family is unheard of, vile, and condemnable. Like a recognized member of the Nigerian Bar Association and a qualified legal practitioner, Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor is beyond being handled as a duly investigated and indicted common criminal on the run.

“Also under Nigeria’s extant laws, applicable globally, Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor and other licensed legal practitioners have right and duty to represent and defend any citizen or citizens or national or nationals irrespective of gravity of crime(s) alleged to have been committed.

"Nigerian security forces are hereby requested to withdraw and end their siege, as well as to respect due process. If Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor is wanted for a legitimate offense, the proper procedures must be followed to the letter. This was especially true when he called and notified the area’s head police officer (ACP Afolabi) that he would be in town for the weekend. As a result, if anything bad happens to the Lawyer, his family, or their properties, including their home and law offices, the entire world is on notice to hold the Nigerian government accountable.”
