No fewer than nineteen persons were feared dead in Doguwa local government area of Kano after a vehicle conveying them was eroded by flood at the weekend.

Kano witnessed a torrential downpour that lasted several hours at the weekend, destroying properties estimated over N100 million.

“Human beings and domesticated animals, including birds, as well as food stuff were destroyed, as several homes submerged in the flood,” Mr. Saidu, a resident, said.

Village head of Doguwa settlement, Alhaji Yusuf Umar, confirmed the incident to newsmen.

He said 15 bodies have been recovered while search was intensified to recover the corpses of the remaining four victims.

Umar narrated the vehicle conveying the dead was washed away by the flood after its engine went off in the middle of a bridge on Friday night.

He added the bridge was submerged by flood following the heavy downpour.

“The engine of the vehicle seized and the car stopped abruptly and before the driver could reignite it, the flood washed the car away with the passengers.

“We have not gotten any survivor yet. We are still searching for corpses,” Umar said.

Spokesman for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ali Abdullahi Garko, also confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate.

He said the State Government had sent a delegation headed by SEMA Executive Secretary, Saleh Jili, to commiserate with families of the victims.
