Twelve soldiers of the Nigerian Army attached to Operation Hadin Kai Theatre Command in Maiduguri, Borno State, were on Thursday killed in an ambush by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists as they travelled to Maiduguri from Monguno.

The insurgents were said to have made away with three gun trucks and rifles seized from the soldiers, as well as cash, according to The Punch.

According to a military source, the ambush occured around 8.30am along the Monguno-Maiduguri Road.

The source said, “The Nigerian army has started the deployment of soldiers and officers that have overstayed from the theatre of operations.

Some of the soldiers that were leaving their post for Maiduguri were the ones that were ambushed. They drove into mines that were suspected to have been planted by the insurgents because the incident happened early in the morning.

“They were also transporting some fighting equipment to the headquarters of the theatre command in Maiduguri. The insurgents made away with some of these equipments.

They took away three gun trucks with many ammunition and some reasonable amount of cash.

The military source explained further that the identities of the soldiers killed in the ambush have not yet been ascertained but those injured were given first aid treatment and rushed to the military hospital in Maiduguri where they are currently receiving medical attention.
